An integrated strategy for improving contrast, durability, and portability of a Pocket Colposcope for cervical cancer screening and diagnosis

INTRODUCTION We have previously developed a portable Pocket Colposcope for cervical cancer screening in resource-limited settings. In this manuscript we report two different strategies (cross-polarization and an integrated reflector) to improve image contrast levels achieved with the Pocket Colposcope and evaluate the merits of each strategy compared to a standard-of-care digital colposcope. Th...

A large population-based randomized controlled trial to increase attendance at screening for cervical cancer.

OBJECTIVES Although cervical cancer is one of the potentially most preventable malignancies, it is still fairly common. In settings with established screening programs, increased compliance is important for future reduction in cervical cancer incidence, but it is presently unclear how this can be effectively achieved. METHODS We conducted a randomized controlled trial including all 12,240 wom...

Interventions to increase cervical cancer screening rates.

Evidence-Based Answer Invitation letters are the most studied method of encouraging cervical cancer screening, and they are effective (relative risk [RR] = 1.44; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.24 to 1.52).1-3 Invitation letters may be more cost-effective than more intensive recruitment efforts (e.g., telephone interviews, promotional campaigns). Other educational interventions (e.g., other typ...

Nanomechanical clues from morphologically normal cervical squamous cells could improve cervical cancer screening.

Applying an atomic force microscope, we performed a nanomechanical analysis of morphologically normal cervical squamous cells (MNSCs) which are commonly used in cervical screening. Results showed that nanomechanical parameters of MNSCs correlate well with cervical malignancy, and may have potential in cancer screening to provide early diagnosis.
